Abstract:Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a well-developed imaging diagnostic method which finds a myriad of applications in medical and non-medical fields. In this talk, I will describe the work developed in the Photonics and Biophotonics Laboratory, DF/UFPE, over the last 10 years in the applications of homemade and commercially available Fourier Domain OCT systems to dental and dermatological applications. In Dental OCT, we have studied hard and soft tissue both in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo. Examples of caries detection, remineralization follow-up and clinical applications will be given. Dental materials have also been extensively, particularly evaluating enamel and dentin after preparation for bracket or veneers placement. More recently, we started a program looking at diagnostic of periodontal diseases, and its relation to rheumatological autoimmune diseases.
I will also describe the use of gold and rare earth doped nanoparticles in enhancing OCT images for dentistry applications. In dermatology, OCT has been used to evaluate port-wine stain and hemangioma vascular lesions, and an example will be discussed.
